VServer templates

For all those folks out there using Linux VServer – I’ve prepared templates with some popular Linux distributions. Creating VServer from template is much faster and will work on any VServer enabled system. They may also be used as regular chroots.

All templates contain just very base system so don’t expect any software there. You will have to install what you need and fully configure your VServer guest or chroot. It is not recommended to use these templates to install standalone systems. It is possible but requires knowledge of what is not required in VServer guest (thus missing from templates), but is required to properly boot standalone system.

Currently available distributions are: Centos 5.x, Fedora 10, Debian 5.0 (Lenny), Debian Unstable (Sid), Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron), Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope).

I’ll add templates with three versions of PLD Linux soon and then try to prepare more templates (Gentoo, Arch, OpenSuse) but can’t promise anything. All systems are available in i386/i686 and x86_64 versions.

Is PLD vserver package updated with these templates?

Those aren’t templates to use within package. Those are pre-built vserver guests to use with “-m template” build method.

Hi,
I use your template for ubuntu and they work perfectelly.
I need some help, Can you explain how you’ve created your templates? If you have a tuto or some links which explain how to create template from scrach, thanks for sharing!!

I’ve just come to this page and saw your templates. Thank you for this work!

Yanick: sorry, no tutorial and no links. I’ve simply created base ubuntu install using debootstrap, chrooted into it, removed all packages not needed inside vserver guest, disabled all startup items which were either not needed inside guest or were causing problems and thats all – template ready.

Dmitry: I’m glad you’ve found them useful!

AWESOME! Thanks so much for the centos5 template. I was finding the the YUM way of creating a VM was going nowhere fast, and I was just about to grab a 64bit PC and create a barebones template myself, when I thought to google for “centos vserver template” and BOOM there you popped up.

Thanks for saving me a bunch of work.

You are welcome KiltBear!

I guess I should update my VServer templates. I should have done it in November last year ;-) Sorry for not keeping them up to date but my life is quite crazy for last few months.
